President's Message

Greetings! I hope your spring semester is starting off well.

It seems strange to use the word ‘spring’ with the arctic cold and snow making an appearance almost every other day. However, as Iowans, we know
warmer weather is not too far around the corner!

National Policy Seminar:

by Pat Thieben

Health Science Consultant
Iowa Department of Education
Despite a cold winter storm that cancelled many flights and shut the National Government down for more than a day, Nicole Mutchler, Western Region HOSA Vice President and high school junior at Sioux City West, travelled to Washington, DC to attend the 2014 National Policy Seminar.  Nicole was joined by members of the Iowa Department of Education and a fellow student from Waterloo High School Arijan Alagic.  While advocating for career and technical education and Perkin’s funding, Nicole had the opportunity to meet face-to-face with Senator Tom Harkin (D), Senator Charles Grassley (R), and Congressman Tom Lathum (R – 3rd District).  Nicole also met with congressional aides for Bruce Braley (D – 1st District), David Loebsack (D – 2nd District), and Steve King (R – 4th District).
The National Policy Seminar provide opportunities for participants to learn the latest affecting the CTE field, Make a real difference for career and technical education at the national level, and become an effective advocate for career and technical education.  IHEA is an affiliate of IACTE and ACTE.

HOSA State Leadership Conference:
The HOSA State Leadership Conference was held on March 16-18 at the Des Moines Mercy Campus and the Holiday Inn Mercy.  Over 100 students and advisers attended the conference.  Not all chapters were able to join us this year as they are new chapters and still getting started but we are hopeful the students will be able to join us next year.  We also entertained a few potential advisors at the conference and are hopeful we will have some new chapters for next year.
Students competed in events such as Speaking Skills, Prepared Speaking, Medical Photography, Interviewing Skills, Nursing Assistant, Clinical Specialty, Sports Medicine, Physical Therapy, Career Problem Solving and Forensic Medicine to name a few.  Winners were announced at the awards session held on Tuesday, March 18.
Two great workshops were presented to students on Health Leadership and the Affordable Care Act and Stroke Information and Assessment.  In addition, our guest speaker on Sunday night, Darla Hanson’s topic was “Every Adversity is a Blessing in Disguise”.  Students felt she was very inspirational and it was a great way to kick off the conference.
Three companies/nonprofit agencies from the area set up vendor booths to share information with students and advisors.  They included The Iowa Department of Public Health, The College of St. Mary in Nebraska, and Cengage Publishing.

The new officers are:
