President's Message

Greetings! I hope your spring semester is starting off well.

It seems strange to use the word ‘spring’ with the arctic cold and snow making an appearance almost every other day. However, as Iowans, we know
warmer weather is not too far around the corner!
First, I would like to introduce you to the new affiliate members joining the IHEA board.

HOSA is a co-curricular student organization designed for students that are interested in pursuing a career in health care.
he mission of HOSA is to enhance the delivery of compassionate, quality health care by providing opportunities for knowledge, skill and leadership development of all health science education students, therefore, helping the student meet the needs of the health care community” (
).   Membership dues in Iowa are $20.00 per year.  Students have the opportunity to participate in fall leadership conference in October and state leadership conference in March.  The goal of fall conference is to encourage students to network and build leadership skills.  The purpose of the state leadership conference is continued development of leadership skills as well as the opportunity to compete with students in Iowa in health care related events. The events are broken down into six categories. These categories include Health Science Events, Health Profession Events, Emergency Preparedness Events, Leadership Events, Teamwork Events, and Recognition Events.  The variety of events available provides the students with the opportunity to find an area they are interested in and explore it further.  The top three competitors in each event earn the opportunity to attend and compete at the national conference in June. Students learn many skills in HOSA that provide lifelong benefits.  As an advisor it is awesome to see students excited about learning!  If you are interested in starting a HOSA chapter, please contact Julie Babbitt juliebabbitt7@gmail.com.

Below are some important HOSA dates:

March 16-18, 2014 – State Leadership Conference – Des Moines, IA

June 25-28, 2014 – National Leadership Conference – Orlando, FL
